The Office of Border Economy and Logistics Study (OBELS) is an economic and logistics data center specializing in cross-border trade and logistics study. It was established in 2013 under Mae Fah Luang University. OBELS aims to provide essential economic information to the general public, academics, government agencies, and the private sector, particularly focusing on the Upper Mekong River region. This initiative is designed to elevate foundational knowledge crucial to Thailand’s development, ultimately benefiting human resources and enhancing the competitiveness of businesses and the nation. This, in turn, will contribute to improving the overall quality of life in society moving forward.
The Office of Border Economy and Logistics Study (OBELS) has three main missions as follows:
Knowledge Repository Management: This involves the collection and management of economic, trade, investment, logistics, tourism, and economic and social development data. This encompasses both primary and secondary data in the form of growth trends and various indices. It also involves the collection of statistical data at the national, regional, and provincial levels.
Economic Research and Analysis: OBELS conducts research in the fields of economics, trade, investment, logistics, tourism, and economic and social development. This includes the creation of environmental and socio-economic indices known as the Border Environmental Socio-economics (BESE) index.
Academic Services and Publications: OBELS provides academic services and publishes research papers related to economics, trade, investment, logistics, tourism, and economic and social development.
